Week 12: Evaluating Information & Academic Research

Introduction
This week we discussed the credibility of sources/fake news as well as how to go about researching for a paper. We talked about clues to look for when it comes to picking out fake news. We also discussed how to decide which sources to use in our research papers.
Monday
Image result for fake newsOn Monday, we primarily focused on fake news. We talked about how to know whether or not you should trust a source. Doctora made a very fun powerpoint for us that included many different articles that showed how the media with twist facts or pictures to make a false, yet more interesting news story. The powerpoint also included a series of articles that we had to skim over and decide if they were true or fake. This was very interesting because a lot of the ones that seemed real ended up being false. At the end of class, we were assigned a little bit of homework. We were required to pick a topic, brainstorm a deep question, and pick two articles to print off and pick to class. One of the articles had to be a webpage or magazine while the other had to be a scholarly article. I chose to research John D. Rockefeller because I'm supposed to be writing a paper over that.

Wednesday

Taylor gave us a paper over the CRAAP method. The CRAAP method is made to check your sources and ensure that they are reliable and relevant to your topic of research. CRAAP stands for Currency, Relevancy, Authority, Accuracy, and Purpose. Under each word are a variety of questions. We had to look over our articles and answer the questions to the best of our abilities. This was extremely helpful regarding my actual research paper and gave me a push to finally start.
