Week Six: Diversity & Inclusion II

Image
Introduction 1 This week was a continuation from the previous week, week 5. We were given the assignment to watch  Documented . On Monday of class, we discussed Documented. The documentary is about a well-known journalist who comes out to the world as an undocumented American. It follows him as he meets with political figures over the issues, gives speeches, and attend various events to bring awareness to changes needed regarding immigration. Then we were told we should watch another documentary by Jose, the undocumented American, called  White People . This documentary was more focused on white privilege. He asked many white people how they feel about white privilege and even handed out facts. I did enjoy both of the documentaries, I just feel as though White People  took more of an aggressive approach rather than a progressive one.  Monday 3 Monday's class was dedicated to discussing Documented. At the beginning of class, we were given a sheet of paper to fill

Week Five: Diversity & Inclusion I

Introduction 1 This weeks topic was the first part of diversity and inclusion. On Monday we filled out a piece of paper on what we know about immigration and how/if it affects us. We had a very interesting discussion on what we believe when it comes to immigration and why. Then Doctora asked if any of us had watched Which Way Home . Only one of us watched it so round of applause for the one student who did. We spent the last 15 minutes of class watching the beginning of Which Way Home and were given instructions to finish the rest on our own before class on Wednesday. On Wednesday we were able to discuss the film since everyone had finally seen it. We were all given another assignment at the beginning of class about the documentary. Then we had to discuss with the people around us what we wrote down, and then we had a whole class discussion about it. At the very end of class, we were put into groups of three to discuss questions regarding the documentary.  Immigration 2

Week Four: Growth Mindset, Academic Basics, and Academic Integrity

Image
Introduction This weeks topic was growth mindset, academic basics, and academic integrity. Due to the hurrication last week we didn't have any class discussions, so on Monday of this week, we used class time to discuss in-class discussions (ironic right?). On Wednesday we spent most of the class discussing growth mindset versus fixed mindset. Growth mindset is when you take something your bad at and instead of just living with it, you push yourself to get better at it. A fixed mindset is just accepting you're bad at something and never trying to go above that expectation. Near the end of class on Wednesday we also talked a little bit about academic integrity and what it means to us as students.  I really enjoyed the class this week. I felt as though the discussions flowed really well and it was overall a really fun environment.  Monday Upon entering class on Monday we were all given a sheet of paper over in-class discussions. On one side of the paper, we had to describe

Week Three : In-Class Discussions & Speech on Campus and Beyond

Introduction 1 Due to our "hurrication" this week, we were unable to meet in class. Because of this, we were left on our own to read articles on  this weeks topic and create our blogpost solely on our reflections of said articles. This weeks topic was In-Class Discussions and Speech on Campus and Beyond.  In-Class Discussions 2 For me, this topic is most relevant to FYE. Our FYE course is set up in order to have in-depth and personal class discussions. Almost everyone has experienced terrible class discussions that consist of mindless inputs from everyone solely on their own opinions. According to  I Take Your Point , an chapter from the book I Say, I Say, a class discussion must consist of people not only sharing their own ideas and opinions, but also thoroughly listening and responding to others ideas as well. Many people go into large discussions thinking only about their ideas and not how that affects others or contributes to the conversation. To have

Week Two : Intro to Honors and Time Management

Image
Introduction   This week we were given two topics, intro to honors and time management. The two topics were split into two lessons, so we discussed intro to honors on Monday and time management on Wednesday. These topics were extremely helpful and informational for me. Intro to Honors 1 On Monday Dr. Engel, Dr. Desiderio, and Erin Martin came to class to talk to us about all things honors. First Erin Martin, our honors advisor, talked to us about the different honors requirements . Some honors requirements we talked about were the FYE class, honors core classes, and the thesis. She brushed up on what we would need to do for our thesis and highly encouraged us to meet with her frequently so she can keep an eye on our progress. Next Dr. Desiderio talked to us primarily about experiential learning and why the honors community requires for us to do at least one a year. He explained that being apart of honors means we are expected and/or encouraged to go above and beyond the
